While developing the project detailed design, the institute GEO-DESIGN revealed a troubleshooting section with its foundation containing mud-peat and young peat, wet and 3m to 4.1m water saturated, unapplicable for a motorway embankment base.
Analysis of the troubleshooting embankment section (stakes 77 to 87), assisted by PLAXIS program, was carried out by the road construction company VAD AO’s design department with participation of Gexa’s engineers. Pursuant to analysis of the embankment settlement and consolidation period, and stability of its base and slopes, a decision was taken to reinforce the embankment base with Geospan GT PP 80 woven geotextile, with fabrics laid in cross direction in the form of a 1 m high closed casing and full replacement of peat (up to 4 m). As a result of the engineering solution implementation, rigidity in the embankment lower part increased, variation of settlement values along the axis and at the edge of the embankment cross section decreased, deformation irregularity due to variable geotechnical profile decreased, consolidation period shortened.
